That Work Thing: A 32 Hour Work Week

A bill was introduced by Bernie Sanders last week. A 32 hour work week in four years.

It’s a good idea, but I don’t think this is going to work.

I don’t know if this is just manufacturing, but look at all of the companies that have 40 hour a week employees.

Restuarants, grocery stores, salons and barbershops, gas stations, hospitals and clinics, just to name a few.

How can these companies go from 40 to a 32 work week? Will they be able to find workers and stay open? What about the companies that run 24/7?

What about the company that has a 40 hour a week shift and a part time weekend shift. What about the part time workers? What do they get?

And what about overtime? As an example let’s say one person makes $1,000.00 gross a week. This $25 an hour for a 40 hour week

Ok. For a 32 hour work week the pay would be $31.25. A $6.25 an hour increase for 8 less hours a week.

What about the people who don’t deserve a raise — if we call it that. The workers who sit in the bathroom for a half hour at a crack or the people who stand around and talk, or who text off and on at their desk and all day.

I’m not even going to write about overtime pay….

I think every company should be able to decide for themselves if this is going to work for them.

This concept needs a lot more work, time and thought put into it.

It’s more than more money. It’s about what works for that company and it’s employees. What does the company want. What do their employees need?

But I think the bigger question is who is going to pay the higher cost for the product or service? The money for the higher wages is going to have to come from somewhere.

Nice thought.

What are your feelings? Do you think this is going to work?
